How Our Senses Experience Flavor: Smell

What You’ll Need:

· A variety of food or beverages

· Willing volunteer(s)

1) Gather three food or drink items that have similar appearances. Examples: three different dark-colored sodas, three similar-looking spices, etc.

2) Ask the volunteer(s) to use ONLY their sense of smell to figure out the flavor or name of the item they are smelling. If the appearance of the food or beverage item will provide the volunteer(s) with a clue, volunteer(s) should close their eyes.

3) After the volunteer(s) have smelled each food item, ask them to identify and describe what they smelled. Let the volunteer(s) know if they guessed correctly or not.
