For the past five years, Board Secretary Claire Kultgen McDonald has been a dedicated and passionate supporter of the Dr Pepper Museum, playing a key role in its continued growth and transformation. As a valued member of our Board, she has witnessed firsthand how much the Museum has evolved in a short period and been right there with us every step of the way! From championing new initiatives to sponsoring impactful projects like the rewrap of our iconic delivery truck, her commitment to preserving and sharing the Dr Pepper story has helped shape the Museum into what it is today.
Q1: What first inspired you to get involved with the Dr Pepper Museum, and what has kept you engaged over the years?
Claire: I lived downtown near the Dr Pepper Museum while attending Baylor University, and I used to treat myself to a float while studying. Back then, the Museum was much quieter, and that peaceful atmosphere made it a special place for me. It’s been amazing to watch it grow into the vibrant, bustling space it is today—definitely not a quiet study spot anymore! I wanted to get involved because I love the unique blend of the Museum’s mission—a museum, charity, community partner, and a business. And, of course, I’ve always loved Dr Pepper.
Q2: You’ve been such an important part of the Museum board—What’s the “why” that drives your commitment?
Claire: I’m passionate about organizations that embrace change—trying new things, adapting quickly, and taking bold steps. With all the growth in downtown Waco and the rise in tourism, the Museum has kept pace with Waco’s dynamic, forward-thinking culture, which I really admire. I also appreciate how the Museum tells not only the story of Dr Pepper, but also explores broader social history—like the counter sit-ins during the civil rights movement. And I love that the gift shop and other revenue opportunities help fuel continued investment in exhibits and facilities. The interactive add-onexperiences the Museum offers now are so fun and engaging—I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Q3: The rewrap on the truck and trailer looks amazing—thank you for making that possible! What inspired you to support that project, and how do you see it helping share the Museum’s story with the community and beyond?
Claire: The Museum is a huge draw for out-of-town visitors, but it also works hard to stay connected to the local community. One great way to do that is by taking the museum experience directly to schools and events around Waco. We felt that having an F-150 out in Waco—actively involved and visible in our local community—was the perfect fit to help make that happen.
Q4: We know the Museum more than just a building—in your eyes, what makes the Dr Pepper Museum so special to Waco, and why do you think supporting it matters?
Claire: I love Waco history. My family and Bird Kultgen Ford have been part of this community since 1936, so it’s really meaningful to be connected to institutions that have deep roots here. The Dr Pepper Museum is one of those special places that’s been part of Waco for generations, and supporting it helps preserve and share that history with both locals and visitors.
Q5: We’d love to hear about any experiences that have made your involvement extra meaningful. Looking back, what are some of your favorite memories or moments with the Museum that really stand out to you?
Claire: One of my favorite memories is visiting the Museum with my grandfather, David Kultgen. He was downtown during the tornado and shared some of his memories of that day with me—it made the visit even more powerful. I also remember him buying me Dr Pepper-flavored gum from the gift shop, which I thought was the coolest thing ever. Now, my own kids love the Museum just as much. My husband and I even bought a commemorative brick for them, and they love finding it in the courtyard.
Q6: Any advice you’d give to someone on the fence about getting involved with the Dr Pepper Museum—either by joining the board or supporting in other ways?
Claire: The Museum welcomed over 250,000 visitors last year—it’s truly one of the faces of Waco. Supporting it, whether through board service or other contributions, helps ensure we provide a great experience that reflects the spirit and pride of our community. I’m grateful to be part of something that makes such a meaningful impact.
