NASHVILLE, TN – The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) proudly announces that the Dr Pepper Museum is the sole Texas recipient of the Award of Excellence for The People Who Made Dr Pepper/ Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 79th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. The AASLH annually recognizes institutions and individuals for excellence in state and local history. This year, the Dr Pepper Museum is one of 47 national award recipients, honored for its exhibition The People Who Made Dr Pepper/Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper, which shares the stories of the people who worked in the building when it was a Dr Pepper bottling plant. The Museum staff traveled to Mobile, Alabama on September 13 to accept the award at AASLH’s national conference. Please celebrate with us by watching the Award Ceremony here!
The Dr Pepper Museum is dedicated to both educating and entertaining visitors about the history of Dr Pepper, the soft drink industry, and the local history of Waco. When the Museum opened in 1991, the Bottling Room exhibit was the first major exhibition open to the public. Since 2018, the Museum has made a concerted effort to better serve the community by providing a more accurate account of historical events.
Reflecting on the exhibition’s national success, Andrea J. Barefield, City of Waco Council Member, District I said, “Everyone’s story deserves to be told, and Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper makes history accessible to everyone through the inclusion of the voices of those who worked at the plant and creates a more inclusive museum environment for our community and visitors. A richer history of Waco is presented, and a more interesting and impactful experience is created for visitors of all backgrounds.”
Through the help and guidance of a diverse group of members of our Exhibition Task Force, the Museum renovated the bottling room exhibition space in 2023. It has remained one of the most popular exhibits in the Museum. The exhibition features an accessible water well experience (no railings), first-person interpretations from key employees, interactive activities, and bottling equipment used in the Artesian Manufacturing & Bottling Company building.

El Museo Dr Pepper Gana el Premio de la Excelencia AASLH 2024
NASHVILLE, TN – La Asociación Estadounidense de Historia Estatal y Local (AASLH, por sus siglas en inglés) anuncia con orgullo que el Museo Dr Pepper es el único en Texas que recibió el Premio de la Excelencia por la exhibicion The People Who Made Dr Pepper/ Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper. Los premios AASLH de Liderazgo en Historia, ahora en su 79.º año, son el reconocimiento más prestigioso por los logros en la preservación e interpretación de la historia estatal y local. La AASLH reconoce anualmente a instituciones e individuos por su excelencia en la historia estatal y local. Este año, el Museo Dr Pepper es uno de los 47 ganadores del premio nacional, honrado por su exposición The People Who Made Dr Pepper/Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper, que comparte las historias de las personas que trabajaron en el edificio cuando fue una planta embotelladora de Dr Pepper.
