WACO, Texas– The Dr Pepper Museum is thrilled to announce the Museum was selected as a 2023 Award of Excellence winner by the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH) Leadership in History awards committee for Sit Down to Take a Stand Waco Lunch Counter Exhibition and Soda Fountain Redesign. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards is recognized as the nation’s most prestigious competition for recognition of achievement in state and local history.

The Museum’s Sit Down to Take a Stand Waco Lunch Counter Exhibition is one of the 51 national awards honoring people, projects, and exhibits. The exhibition addresses the history and stories of sit-ins at lunch counters and soda fountains told from perspectives yet to be addressed in our community and gives visitors the opportunity to:

• Learn about the impact of lunch counter/soda fountain sit-ins and why they were significant in the Civil Rights Movement.
• Have a better understanding that Black community members do not have the same nostalgic viewpoint of soda fountains.
• Appreciate Black community members who withstood the pressure to give up during the lunch counter protests.
• To consider what would be the next steps needed for further positive change.

The Dr Pepper Museum prides itself in sharing and educating the history of the soft drink industry, as well as the history of Waco. Since 2018, the Museum has taken additional steps to focus on better serving the community by working towards accurately reflecting history, including difficult subjects that have not been tackled.

With the help and guidance of a diverse group of members of our DEAI Committee, the Museum opened the exhibition free of charge to the public in its Soda Fountain area. The space is designed to be ADA and kid-friendly, with closed captions and image captions to allow visitors with hearing assistance needs to participate as well.

WACO, Texas- El Museo Dr Pepper se complace en anunciar que el Museo fue seleccionado como ganador del Premio a la Excelencia 2023 por el comité de premios de Liderazgo en Historia de la Asociación Estadounidense de Historia Estatal y Local (AASLH, por sus siglas en inglés) por Sit Down to Take a Stand Waco Lunch Counter exposición y rediseño de fuente de soda. Los Premios de Liderazgo en Historia de la AASLH son reconocidos como la competencia más prestigiosa de la nación para el reconocimiento de logros en la historia estatal y local.

La exhibición Sit Down to Take a Stand Waco Lunch Counter del museo es uno de los 51 premios nacionales que honran a personas, proyectos y exhibiciones. La exposición aborda la historia y las historias de sentadas en los mostradores de comida y las fuentes de soda contadas desde perspectivas que aún no se han abordado en nuestra comunidad y brinda a los visitantes la oportunidad de:

• Aprender sobre el impacto de las campañas de sentadas de comidas/fuentes de refrescos y por qué fueron importantes en el Movimiento de Derechos Civiles.
• Tener una mejor comprensión de que los miembros de la comunidad negra no tienen el mismo punto de vista nostálgico de las fuentes de soda.
• Apreciar a los miembros de la comunidad negra que resistieron la presión de rendirse durante las protestas en el mostrador del almuerzo.
• Considerar cuáles serían los próximos pasos necesarios para un mayor cambio positivo.

El Museo Dr Pepper se enorgullece de compartir y educar nuestros visitantes sobre la historia de la industria de los refrescos, así como la historia de Waco.
